Community Opportunities

Physical activity does not have to end when Adapted Physical Education ends because there are many opportunities in Western New York for students with disabilities. Many of these services focus on a single sport, many sports or life time skills. Below is a list of some community opportunities available in the area. TOPSoccer- This program is designed for children with disabilities, ages 5 to 21. TopSoccer accommodates all disabilities whether mental or physical. This is an exciting program that brings the joy of playing soccer to players who have not traditionally had a place in the youth soccer system.

Miracle League of Grand Island & WNY- The Miracle League is a baseball/softball league for children with disabilities in Grand Island, NY. League play began in the spring of 2012 on their state of the art baseball field that is also wheelchair accessible. This is a great opportunity for students who have never played or wish to continue playing baseball.

Special Olympics- The Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a

continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of skills and friendship with their families, Special Olympics athletes and the community

Buffalo Theraputic Riding Center-There is a unique bond between horses and people that can be particularly meaningful to children with disabilities. Riding programs provide a relaxing, non-academic environment in which children can interact with adults and peers and more importantly with their horse.

Adapted Recreation Program, Cheektowaga- This program aims to provide a variety of adapted recreational activities, provide social opportunities and Special Olympics training. It is through these activities that participants can work on improving motor control, boos self-esteem, positively manage behavior and increase social skills.
